how do i repair gear selection 51 plate transit front wheel drive?

my 51 transit jumps out if reverse if i get it and wont select 2nd or 4th but only when it feels like it. makes no difference if its hot or cold and on inspection the cables seem ok but i cant find any adjustment. its covered 250k the gear box doesn't leak whine or grind. whats going on?
