Mend Volkswagen MK4 Door Small Front

vw mk4, 5 door, light problem?

the door light or courtesy light, the small one at the bottom of the two front doors, does not work, i have tested for power at the fitting but there is nothing, so how does it work as i cannot see a switch anywhere, and is this light governed by anything else or should it always work when door is opened.

I don't have the answer because I'm looking for one also. However, I just found out that the small light at the bottom of the door is not working when I open the door. The worst thing is that it is only the driver side not the paassenger side. And I'm just like to see if i can get an answer.
