Hoover ACM washing machine - programme selector fault?

I have a Hoover ACM 16 washing machine. It was given to me by someone so not sure how old it is etc, but don't think it had had much wear. I have had for about a year - and it has been used quite a lot...about 6-9 loads per week
It never has rinsed very well (I keep it on the extra rinse setting all the time and clean the drawer regularly)...but recently I have noticed white powder streaks on dark things and sometimes things didn't seem well spun...
The other day (I was watching) the wash emptied and rinse started without it spinning (thought must get new brushes) - then it seemed to spin happily enough later. Today I put it on and the wash was over in 20min...obviously it hadn't done a full wash - so I turned it on again and it seems to be working...
The programme dial spins round making a clicking noise whilst it is washing - which I thought was normal for this machine...but now think might be a fault...
Does anyone have any idea what the problem is?
