My computer (e-machine) is infected. I want to remove viruses & trojans?

...on my own. How do I do this? I want to install an anti-virus program but I can't do it until I clear the computer in question of some 77 trojans/viruses(?).

Please, I need someone to give me the basic idea about what to do. I've got an e-machine T1045 with 128 mgs of ram and 40 gigs of hard-drive space with a cd and floppy storage device and an external hard-drive. I just want to be rid of the viruses/trojans(?) before installing an anti-virus program.

You could boot a Knoppix CD and fix you files.

www.knoppix.net=>download the CD=> burn it=>boot the machine from the CD.

You could even download it in a virus ridden machine.
It doesn't catch viruses because it's Linux.

Doesn't change you HDD files (unless you want it to).

You can even use it as a regular OS instead of windows.

Suggest that before you go to the expence of a technician, you join PC Advisor, www.pcadvisor.co.uk there are excellent people there who will probably guide you through your problem.
With little knowledge, but a bit of common sen, you should be able to do this yourself.

Helen, I can't afford a tech, so I've got to do it myself. Can you suggest a way (through instruction or by a reference) that presents the least chance of my neophyte self screwing things up.

I wouldn't advise you doing this yourself. Some viruses enbed themselves in the heart of the machine and are very difficult to erradicate completely. I would take your computer to a tech specialist to have these removed and worse case scenario is that the machine will need reformatting that will put it back to factory settings. You will then need to reload all software and emails etc from your back up disc. If you don't have a back up copy, a tech specialist can attempt to create one before reformatting. And whatever you do after that, make sure you have a current version of virus protecting software on the machine.
