EPC and Check Engine Light?

I purchased a used 2002 VW Beetle GLS. Car ran well for 2000 miles, next thing, check engine light on, found a crack in the air box and hose air mass meter is reading too much air flow. Replaced it and two hours later, EPC light came on with reduced power. Sat for several hrs and went into town, no lights for about 20 min. No lights for two days but only short trips. Now EPC and check engine on and will not go more than 1000 rpms. Sitting at shop right now, luckily broke down a mile from shop. Any Ideas?
