How do I turn off a black box over screen on my JVC AV27WF36?

How do I turn off a black box over screen on my JVC AV27WF36. I cannot find the original remote for this TV. I believe what I am looking at is a V chip function box? I have tried to unplug unit, etc. or follow the instructions using a programmable remote but can not get rid of this black "menu like" box that covers over half of the screen. It only shows up on all TV channels and any newer DVD's that are rated over PG-13. (older dvds play fine) This is why I think it has something to do with the V-chip function.
