cant get into my files?

hi there all the icons on my dell computer dissappeared-i may have touched a button!!
i restored the icons to the screen but now when i want to go into my files it is saying i dont have permission to do so.
the files are important i.e my c.v etc and other business documents i need.
does anyone know what i can do to allow me back into my files

If you're running Vista, you may need to make sure that you're logged on as administrator. Go into control panel and then to users. Either see if you can switch off the User Account Control or find your account and follow the instructions to make the account administrator. I'm assuming that you hadn't password protected the files?
