My rover 45 02 plate 1.6 is losing water from the engine?

I have the problem that my engine is losing water and no one can diagnose the fault. I have had a new radiator, had the head gasket checked, the water checked for emmissions and pressure tested and there is no water in the oil!!! The resevoir was bubbling and over flowing from the cap but since having the radiator changed, there is no obvious sign where the water is leaking from. It seems to affect the heating system as when stationery the air goes from red hot to cold instantly whether the water is full or near empty. I am desperate to diagnose the problem as 4 mechanics have now looked and cannot find what the hell it is!! Please can someone help me??

use a good coolent leak additive and follow the instructions if this cures it even for a short time its likely to be the head gasket a very common fault on this model

I have a rover 45 02 plate except the 1.4, i am loosng water aswell ? but i ragdoll my poor wee banger around ! hopefully not a cracked cylinder !! but i believe its the heater matrix thats went ! Due to replace when i get home !!

Rover head gasket sounds like the problem. You said it was checked, exactly how does one check a head gasket? Other than pulling the head I would not have a clue. Cheers

I fear you have either a blown cylinder head gasket (I know you say its been checked) or a cracked cylinder block. Most of your symptoms would suggest that. To narrow it down - I assume there are no drips or puddles from under the engine area and no little jets of steam from a hose under the bonnet? If that is the case the only other way to 'lose' water is through the engine and out of the exhaust. Check the exhaust colour when the engine is hot - the 'smoke' should be clear. If it is white then it is steam and that is where your water is going. Sorry to have to suggest bad news, maybe someone else can offer a less expensive explanation!
