why arent there any icons or programmes?

when switching my laptop on it sets up as usual with the background, but i have no icons, or prgorammes located on the sreen. it is an advent laptop about 2 years old.

right click anywhere on the desktop and in the pop up menu, scroll to "arrange Icons by" and cover it with the mouse, and in the next pop up menu select "show desktop icons" and either tick it or untick it.Icons then appear or dissappear.
