If you have Windows 64 bit, 4 Gb of RAM in the lowest amount needed to have descent performances. The recommended amount is at least 8 Gb.

In the useless tollbars list, you must include those from your anti-virus and any other security appication. In fact, remove any added toolbar beside the default ones and those that you created yourself.

Install CCleaner and run it every 1 to 3 months. Great at removing left over files.

Run a full anti-virus scan. In some cases, it's adviseable to sedule a boot time scan.

Run a full anti-spyware scan. Spybot is made specificaly to scan and kill non-viral pests like spywares and other junk. Here again, a boot time scan may be usefull. After the scan, use the "Imunise" option.

Defragment any conventional hard drives, but never defragment any SSD.
I use Perfect disk, and used SpeedDisk on an older computer. Those premium defragmenters are very effecient, server grade, applications. They both have a "Set and forget" mode to inteligently defragment your drives with a self adjusting scheduling.

Some times, the Windows Activation Technology start to missbehave. In that case, you should get and run the "Remove WAT" application. It's designed expressely to cure the case when a genuine installation start to be reported as not genuine.
Warning ! It's considered a "Hacking" tool and several security applications will isue a warning about it and some may block it. It's only a warning that you can safely ignore.

How much memory? At least 4BG to run Windows, preferably more (Assuming you have a 64 bit installation). Made a BIG difference to the wife's machine, going from 2GB to 4GB RAM. Changed it from uselss to acceptable in one fell swoop.

Download, update and run Malwarebytes (www.malwarebytes.org) free edition. See if that throws up anything.

Uninstall any of the useless browser toolbars (Ask, etc) and check fo rresource hogs.

You could do well to start a thread on forums.whatthetech.com - they have a few people well-versed in sorting out infections and computers in general. Once you have started, be sue to do what they ask, no more and no less and don't be tempted to do otherwise. Some things are done for specific reasons.
