HOW CAN I GET MY 4870D EUREKA VACUUM TO TURN OFF?

How can I get my 4870D Eureka vacuum to turn off? It is not a year old and I have to unplug it to turn it off. Does this mean it has a short and is dangerous?

It's probably just a bad switch. If it stays running constant without any sparks it is fine, if not annoying.
