Have you moved the height adjustment lever to the floor position? This will release the belt tensioner (the aluminum wheel that presses in on the belt and causes it to get tighter so that it grips the brush roller and makes it spin) and give slack to the belt. With the tensioner out of the way the belt should be able to wiggle into its proper pathway.
