whirring noise on zaffira?

when I try to start my zaffira 2L td 2003 it makes a whiring noise and it takes a long time to start what could be the problem ? thanks

thanks ben i was also told it could be the starter motor because when i try to start in gear it still wont even judder forward could this still be the glow plugs tho ?

whirring..........could be you need desperately new GLOW PLUGS........(spark plugs)......as the whirring may be the engine being strained to start by poor OLDE plugs,,,,,,??
