my epson dx8400 will not connect to my computer?

my epson dx8400 will not connect to my computer?
I can install the software and do photo copies from the printer but it wont connect to the computer . I have an epson stylus dx8400 all in one. the problem is the usb cable, it won't recognisen and when I follow the help instructions it and says something like you need IEEE 1394 support. can you please HELP I have been at this all weekend
