Mend Roper Washing Machine Drain Spin Cycle

How can I fix my Roper washing machine?

I have a Roper washing machine, when I start it it fills with water as it should, but then when it should start the wash cycle it does nothing except make a buzzing/humming sound. Then to get the water out I have to manually turn the dial to the spin cycle and it will drain.

Any ideas on what my problem might be?
