Let run longer on choke than suggested then switch. Ours did this after first bought last season, this season won't work at all. If you just purchased this and can take it back and get a new one, it might be beneficial. Troy-built website reviews post same prob, and eventually not starting. Sounds like some might be defective.

Any suggestions for one that starts for about 5 seconds max, after several trys of starting???

Needs a carb kit most likely. You must check your carb brand and model #. Most likely a walbro but might be a zama. They, MTD / Ryobi use both types. Most common kit is a k10 wat, fits most walbro trimmer carbs.
