How can I fix a faulty speedometer on my 1997 Renault Megane Coupe 1.6s?

Over the past few days when driving out of town my speedometer needle has started bouncing backwards and forwards as if it is on a trampoline.

I might be travelling at 60mph and the needle is at 60mph and then all of a sudden (without me changing speed) the needle will drop to 20mph and then bounce straight back to 60mph.

I am not that mechanically minded but don't mind having a go when I am giving the required info and wonder if this is something I can fix myself or is this something I am going to have to take to my local garage to fix?

I have had the same problem, this is a common problem with renaults. I have replaced the speedo sensor (located ontop of the transmission/gear box), this made no difference at all. I then went onto replace the Odometer this made no effect too?

i have a 1998 1.6 sport coupe and mine is electric you might need to replace the sensor on the gear box/ transmition box hope it help

I have the same problem, unfortunately, these models don't have a speedo cable it's electronic so the answer here is of no help.

the only way you maybe able to stop this problem is to change the speedo cable it runs from the rear of the speedo to the gearbox if this does not help then i would change the speedo clock itself they are quite easy to remove and refit
