john deere lx172?

I bought a LX172 JD mower tractor. he showed me how he was able to get it running but i am trying to fix it right. he turns the key to the on position and then shorts the to wires at the starter and then it starts and runs fine. it appears to me that the ignition switch maybe bad to me. is there a way to check the ignition switch?

Have you tried http://jdparts.deere.com ??
They have a parts directory and diagrams for various tractor components, like the drive train, engine, electric, etc.
