Mend John Deere LX172 Perfect Started Starting

Faulty ignitor ?

I've got a JD LX172 which ran perfect until recently. It started popping a little before starting. Now it won't start but will backfire out the exhaust. I've replaced the coil, carb, ignition circuit board, checked the flywheel key, replaced the head gasket.
I'm at wits end here. Anyone know what is wrong here?
