delta fy780 sewing machine does not turn?

my delta sewing machine fy780. the needle or arm will not go up and down when i use the pedal, you can hear it working but will not move. i can turn it by hand operation but very very hard. but if i use the option for re threading the bobbing, it works. any ideas what it could be please?
