ok cheers guys ill check but sure they seemed fine last time i changed the bulb. i thourght it might have been a fault with the auto switch

There will very probably be a poor connection intermittently making and breaking with vibration - the lamp switching on and off at high frequency so that it looks to be permanently on.

The excessive on/off/on cycling stressing the element.
