Craftsman Lawn tractor stopped and won't restart?

I have a Craftsman lawn tractor model # 247.288851. My daughter was mowing, and the tractor just died. Upon investigation, I found a long narrow spring with one of the ends (curls) nearly freyed off. I found the part in the on-line parts system and ordered a new one. Unfortunately, the pictures in the manual don't show precisely where it goes, and the tractor will not start. I am at a loss of where to begin. I have read about kill switches and the like, but I'm not sure where to begin.
