Remote control?

I have remote control for our electric fire. The remote is No YCT-102. It is not operating the fire. We have not used it for a few years. When I press the on button its neon light comes on but it does not operate the fire. The switch on the fire is set to receive instruction from the remote control but the remote control only does the following function. When I press the button with the flame signal, the fire lights up and goes straight off again. Then the remote does nothing unless I switch the fire on manually then switch it back to remote. Then it does the same again. Please can you help.
