Mend Singer 247 Replace Gear

how to replace the vertical shaft gear in a singer 247 sewing machine. ?

I bought a vintage sewing machine and am trying to get it functional again. It was sewing great after new belts and oil but the vertical gear stripped and I noticed that all of the plastic gears are rotten.
I can not figure out how to get the actual drive shaft out of the way so that I can change the gears. I believe there is a set screw that I can not access or have not figured out the proper way to take it apart.
