Mend Singer 401 Sewing Machine Repair Timing

How do you set the timing on a singer model 401?

The tab that holds the slide plate broke the other day and to replace it you have to remove the bobbin holder and the gear on the bottom. We thought we put it all back the same way but the needle won't pick up the bobbin thread and doesn't make a stitch. Tried adjusting the gear and just get a jam with the thread. Are there timing marks or a procedure to reset everything to before?
