How do you remove and replace the vertical arm shaft and gear in the Singer Model 257? That is, what needs to be removed to get to it?

Johan - YOU are a genius - I looked for hints to remove that stuck on set screw without taking the machine apart for two days and tried a couple to no avail. I happened to breeze past your answer and WA LA - the clouds parted, sun shined bright and drill worked great! Thanks!

bottom panel need to be removed as wel as the top gear on shaft,best way to get to screw on top gear is to drill a 6mm hole at back off machine in line with screw,that normally means just where machine is dented at back.after that simple matter of puling shaft downward. remember you will have to reset timing again
