thank you - apart from the lights flashing and the initial faulty gear box message, I can hear no problem or feel any change in the the way the car works - even going up and down hill, stopping and starting car did between 50-60 fine

If you are lucky you may have just a range sensor fault/adjustment. When lights are flashing you should be in limp, third gear only. For specialist - www.fedauto.co.uk
