how can i fix my old 1992 escort van?

hi, something you could try is on the engine passenger side there is a black box with 2 pipes attached just below that there is an earth strap these usually work themselvs loose i experienced a simelar problem on my 96 van it would crank it's self but when you came to turn the key the handbrake light would come on and stay on even with key not in ignition, the strap is a bugger to get to but well worth a try!!
