iv a escort van 1.8d s reg ?

driving home it lost all power and electric, I looked under the bonnet and found earth from battery negative to the body work had burnt and melted what would cause this problem?

A poor connection to the vehicle bodywork could cause this - use a new cable and check its temperature. There should also be a similar cable from the engine to the body so check this too.
