If I switch to hot water only the central heating comes on as well and that is with the central heating clock fully turned off

with the mode selector switch turned to hot water only, and the central heating timer clock completely turned off, the radiators come on and go off, after 2 or 3 hours. with no hot water taps being used. Also if I put the switch in the nuetral position the same thing happens.

Not sure what you mean, Does the heating switch on and off as normal, or does the radiators get hot/warm when hot water running. If 1st faulty switch, if 2nd probably diverter valve
