It is there as a safety feature to prevent someone opening lid and reaching in while it is still spinning. Any tradesperson with any sense would not do it or advise someone else how to. I know there are a lot of fools out there that will do it. Too much risk just to save a few dollars. My advice is get a new lid lock fitted.
