Mend Camera Battery Problem

I can't get the camera to work unless it's plugged into the charger?

It was bought brand new about 4 yrs a go and used maybe a dozen times. works fine when on the charger but not when unplugged.

sounds like a dead battery - 4 years is a very long life, particularly for one which is rarely used
