BT studio 1500 fault?

I have a problem with one of my handsets, which will not make or receive a call. When attempting a call, I get an intermittent tone rather like the engaged tone and nothing else. Also I cannot receive a call on this handset although the phone will ring.

I have tried fitting new batteries without any improvement.
