Hi Rod,
I have a 1993 Micra Shape and have experienced some akin to your symptom.
May I venture two ideas ?
The first is simple and costs nothing , the second is more costly and involved.
The first idea is to adjust the clutch(Done with a knurled nut and lock nut on the end of the cable. This sit on top of the gear box.I add this in case you are not aux faux with the lay out.
The second moe expensive option is to replace the clutch. This will cost one hundred and fourty pounds at a fast fit clutch garage.
So the selection problem is related to a thing called ; clutch drag.
I hope this resolves your problem.
