BT synergy 3505 phone- crackling noise?

Last 2 days when I enter a number and then press the green dial button I get a horrible crackling noise and nothing happens.I've tried new batteries in the handset and a different handset but still happens. A separate phone upstairs in working fine. I assume the problem is with the base.Any ideas ?
