Mend Kohler 18 HP Engine Clutch Battery

Starting?

I have a sears 18 hp kohler riding lawn mower. When I push the clutch in, it won't turn over. Sometimes when I get the clutch pedal in the right position it will crank. I have to use jumper cables from the battery to the starter to start the engine most of the time. What is causing this problem and how do I fix it.
