Mend Yard Machines 14.5/42 Stopped Low Started

oh-oh?

was running great then white smoke came out so stopped did ck oil was low but not out put more in then started up and ran a little and white smoke again but this time much more I dont have book was given to me and not sure where to start yard machine 14.5 hp/42 any help with ideas would be great I am not scared to get dirty and try to save when I can so this I hope I can fix myself
