my fridge and frezzer is on but not cooling or frezzeing?

Hi I don't know your appliance, but I had a similar experience and found that the fridge/freezer 's heating coil had stopped working in the defrost cycle. I emptied the top freezer, and removed the back panel and found it was all froze up. short on money, I used hot water or a fan and a best was a hair dryer to defrost the ice and caught the water in a pan as best I could. I found I could get by for about two maybe three weeks B4 it would freeze up again. A final answer was the defrost cycle, (heating coil or it's switch just don't remember more). Arnie
