Volvo V40 1.9d 52 plate wont start!!?

Hi,

I have recently bought a volvo v40 52 plate 1.9d, excellent car and I am very happy. However earlier today I was sat at some lights... turned green... went to pull away and vehicle cut out. Attempted to restart nothing, attempted a restart whilst lifting clutch to pull away, turning over but wouldnt start.
I got off the road, through £5 of diesel in, pretty sure I didnt run out but the car is new to me, assumed better safe than sorry.... continued to "mess" under the bonnet to no avail, then the battery died. Charged it with jump leads, turned over but wouldnt start...... pushed down hill attempted bump start in 2nd, it didnt like that to say the least..... Any ideas?

It was only after all this it occured to me earlier in the day, twice I started the car and it did take a while (i.e turned over quite a few times before firing up).

Any advice would be fantastic.
