Mend Sears 917.377291 Tecumseh Model Help

craftsman 6.5 "Tecumseh" Sears model No. 917.377291 lawn mower?

Please help. While replaceing the mounting flange gasket, the camshaft fell out and not sure how to time the gears on the crankshaft and camshaft. I aligned the dot on the crankshaft gear to the dot on the gear on the camshaft, screwed in sparkplug then pulled starter rope. Rope was hard to pull. The mower DID work before replaceing the flange. Rope pulls easy without spark plug. I know its out of timming whats the trick?
