I agree with K, also check the condition of the gear linkage, the large pivot with the ball joints on the linkage wear really badly and some gears are rough, notchy or impossible to get in to, they were originally made of plastic and wore out, they used to sell a half linkage which is fine if the bush on the arm attatched to the subframe isnt loose ( more often than not it was ok, grab it and rock it up and down if it's solid you're laughing) it was just a case of renewing the top half of the linkage with a new one with uprated steel parts, if the arm needs renewed it's not a worry just get the whole kit its only 1 extra bolt to get it off but you will need a small ratchet with a swivel head to get it off. You can do this yourself from the top without a jack or ramp its only held on with clips and a couple of torx bolts and will take about 25 minutes if you've done them before ( give yourself about an hour) and be careful, disconnect the battery if you can as the linkage sits in the middle behind the engine right above the exposed starter terminals. Remember and align the linkage properly after fitting the linkage if it needs it. Hope this helps.
