Mend Rover 45 Overheating Head Gasket Thermostat

ht and cold air?

i have a 52 rover 45 the temp keeps going high for about 10 seconds then goes back to normal at same time hot air goes cold the aa said it was expansion tank cap so i changed it but it is still the same he did sniffer test and said head gasket was ok and thermostat was opening but the hot air seems to switch its self off any ideas thanks alan
