Mend AEG 60870 S Wrong Dishwasher

What's wrong with my AEG 60870 Favorit dishwasher?

My almost 7 year old AEG dishwasher is making a loud droning noise when switched on. It is also producing an electrical/metallic smell.
The machine was bought at the beginning of May 2003 and has not had heavy use.
It's an AEG 60870 Sensorlogic Favorit.
