Mend Clean Top Remove

clean filter?

I have a top loader washing machine and need to clean it out. After I remove the top of the agitator, I cannot get it out to clean any further. Am I not looking in the correct place? I know that there is gross stuff in my washer somewhere, I just need to find it and get to it. Please help
