How can I fix my Pfaff Tipmatic 1151 sewing machine?

The machine belonged to my mother and I wanted to know if there is a way to repair it myself instead of trying to take it to a shop because It will cost me the same to fix it as opposed to getting a new one.
The timing is off and there is a part on the the top when I thread the top thread it snags while sewing. I was told that there is a plastic part on it that may need to be replaced because it could be broken.

I have a pfaff tipmatic 1151 seems it has no power, only lights come on. it has an aftermarket foot pedal but the last owner said; they had no problem with it.
If it's the motor how can I tell and where to buy one reasonable. Could it be with the foot pedal? But why don't I hear the motor? it was on a tiny moment and then totally stoped

First, you need the service manual. Second, a good quality screwdriver set so you don't strip any screws. Chapman makes a good set. After reading the manual and removing the bottom stand and arm cover you will see the gears that can be adjusted to correct the timing issues. once that is put back together you will need to remove the top and side cover to reveal the workings up top where you have thread tangled/stuck. Once that area is cleaned up, you will have a very nice machine that works excellent. The service manual is available for free on line if you google it. Take your time. Its not too difficult to repair yourself if your mechanically inclined.

Hello Cheryl,
You will soon know if the timing is off if the machine misses stitches first making sure you have a good needle in, I can attach timing instructions if you email me and type my address as you say it not as you see it.
