Mend Renault laguna Gearbox Fault

Renault laguna 2002 Auto 1.8 gearbox fault?

when the car kicks down, i hear a noise and get a gear box fault and it goes into emergency mode. when I restart the car the fault clears.

What can be the cause of this.
