Laguna - auto gearbox fault?

I have a 2004 (04) Laguna 2.2 turbo deisel with 25000 miles on clock.
How can I get the following cured - The auto warning light on dash comes on, there is a clunk and I believe the gearbox defaults to third gear - I do still actually have drive. It can happen early in a journey or after an hour. This happens at low speed usually when coming to a stop
Switching off and on clears the problem instantly.
The garage say when they run the diagnostics there is nothing in the memory to explain this fault as switching off clears the memory.
It happened 3 times yesterday.
The Renault garage advice is when it happens again - do not switch the engine off, drive directly to the garage and then the can rerun the diagnostics. Hopefully I will be in the area

Hi John - many thanks for the info - Hardings at Hemel have offered to lend me a car for a week while they drive mine about.
But first - as I am retired I will drive as much as I can over the next week - staying in the area in the hope that the fault reoccurs.
The fault first appeared in Aug last year - they carried out a clip? diagnosis and reset some switches. No problem since then untill a few days ago. When you say possibly expensive do you have any idea what could be wrong?

Hmmm the dreaded Renault auto box.....the garage is actually correct - electronic diagnostics for these is actually good if the gearbox management light is on, but not so otherwise...maybe you could leave the car with them (ask for a courtesy vehicle) and they could be on hand when the fault happens again. The repair costs for these are very high but if you throw yourself at Renaults mercy they may just pay some part of the bill. They did for a Clio of mine which was out of warranty - good luck with this.
