Why my BMW won't start?

I have a 1990 325is BMW, Have had trouble startimg it over the last few weeks. Engine light is on the car turns over fine, but will not start. Keep trying on-off, on-off, engine light goes off and the car starts and runs perfect. Been getting harder and harder and now the engine light won't go off and the car will not start. Replaced the coil, nothing. Do you think it could be the fuel pump???

IF THE ENGINE LIGHT IS ON COULD BE CKP SENSOR BY THE CRANKSHAFT PULLEY WEAK SIGNAL WILL READ AS OUT OF PARAMETERS AND A NON START FAULT WHEREAS NO SIGNAL IS DEEMED NO FAULT AT ALL SO NO LIGHT.
