speakers gone off?

When i tried to use my headphones they would not work by simply plugging em in and selecting headphones in the sound section of the control panel so i thought i should disable speakers to get headphones to work aaarrrgghhh it didnt wotk but now i cannot get the speakers icon back on sound in the control panel and i have no sound!!!!! help
