Mend Creda Make Heater Work

How can I make my Creda heater work?

I have just moved into a new flat and they have installed 2 old looking creda electrical heaters. There are no instructions left behind and I cant see a model number anywhere. The heating comes on sometimes but not others, dont know if a timer has been set or how to set one myself. The only controls are 2 dials on the top. One is for room temp numbered 1-6 (easy) but the other says auto set? and also has numbers 1-6 this doesnt appear to be like a timer as such? When I want to get hte heating on I can try setting the dials to every position but nothing happens then several hours later the heat turns on. Can someone help?

If these are Creda storage heaters, then the right hand dial controls the amount of heat the unit 'stores' overnight - input - and the left hand dial controls the amount of heat it gives out during the day - output (assuming you are on economy 7 heating).

If you have the input dial on too low and the output one on too high, the unit will not store enough heat overnight, and will run out before the end of the day.

There's some good advice on wikipedia! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Storage_heater

Oh, we're having the same problem. There are 2 dials, 1 says Output (1-6) another says Input (1-6). The heating works mainly at midday, and we didn't find out how to set for night time. If someone knows, please...

the thermal storage heaters are typically connected to a control box which in turn is connected to the electric meter. when the meter tells the control box its time to turn on the circuits to the heaters are activated . this is so the heaters use electricity from the night rate. this is sometimes done with an actual timeclock , if so you would want to confirm that the timeclock is set to operate during the nightrate period.
some elctric meters can remember what time it is in the event of a power failure , some not. your utility co. can confirm what you have. if the meter thinks nightrate starts at a different time than the timeclock is set to then you could end up charging the heaters on the day rate , which would cost much more money.
the knobs on top:
one of the controls is for amount of heat stored , one is to control amount released. i think if i remember correctly , the 1-6 knob is how much heat it stores each night.
